A mobile friendly website, also known as a mobile responsive website, is one that can be properly displayed on a handheld device. These devices include smartphones, tablets and any other device that is smaller than a laptop computer. And we all know how popular these devices are becoming.
If you already have a website that’s a few years old, it is probably designed to fit the screen size of a desktop or laptop computer. If that website is not mobile friendly, it may not look the best on a mobile device… ie. images may not fit, text can run off the page and not align properly to the screen size, the user has to zoom in to read the text, or the visitor has trouble clicking on links because the spacing is too close. It gives the user a poor experience.
Why Does Any of This Matter?
Google Research conducted a survey in September 2012 that revealed 72% of consumers wanted websites that worked properly on mobile devices. Further research in the same study showed 67% of respondents said that mobile websites “make me more likely to buy a product or use a service.” That’s a whole lot of people surfing the web on a mobile device. And that was back in 2012!
In addition, 61% said that if they can’t find what they are looking for quickly on a mobile optimised site, they go elsewhere. A more recent survey administered by Didit in April 2015 showed an interesting statistic. Although Google Research strongly pointed to the need for website owners to add mobile version years ago, only 57-percent of existing websites had undergone any update.
Is Your Website Mobile Friendly?
Mobile friendly websites have some very specific differences to desktop-only websites. For example, because the average handheld device is roughly one-fifth the size of a desktop computer screen, a mobile site needs to be easy to read and navigate and scroll. On top of this, since smartphones and tablets often use the mobile phone networks, the pages need to load fast without a lot of extras filling up the site (eg. Massive images).
