[Video Tutorial] Keywords and On-Page SEO

Keywords and On-Page SEO

Keywords and On-Page SEO are important for the ranking of your website.

We have already run through the use of the Google Keyword Planner in a previous video tutorial.

So once you have decided what keywords you should be targeting, you need to know what to do with them.

It is good practice to place keywords in the page title, headings (H1, H2, etc), alt text of images, Meta Desc, Meta Keywords, as well as site and page URLs. But be careful not to overdo it, as placing too many keywords into your site (ie. making it look unnatural) can lead to penalties from Google.

To check some of these, you can install and use SEOBook Toolbar…

Some of the tools that you may find useful –

  • Click on the “SEO Xray” button to check H1, H2, Meta Desc, Meta Keywords, etc.
  • Click on the blue “I” button for PageRank, site age (Wayback machine), Google pages indexed, etc.
  • Click on “View Source” to view the source code (the HTML code behind the page).

For more in-depth analysis of your page, go to and install Screaming Frog…

It has a more in-depth analysis and shows alt text for images on each page, word count, page title, etc. Watch their intro video for a good run-down of what this tool covers.

Optimise Meta Titles and Meta Descriptions

The Meta Titles and Meta Descriptions are what is commonly displayed in the Google search results. So if you have highly relevant Titles and Descriptions that arouse interest in your site, then this can improve the CTR. This is then monitored by Google and can affect your overall rankings as well.

You can use the SEOBook Toolbar – SEO Xray or Screaming Frog to check this on your site.

Meta description – Keep it less than 160 characters, including spaces, otherwise Google may cut the end off to make it fit into their search results page.

Meta title – Likewise, keep it less than 60 characters, including spaces.
